T4 - What is the purpose of a title sequence and film opening?

The purpose of a title sequence is to immediately draw the audience in with music and action relevant to the genre of the film, whilst also presenting who the main actors and actresses are, directors, costume designers etc. who are involved in the production and editing of the film. 

A good example of a simple and effective title sequence is Se7en.
