task 4- what is the purpose of a title sequece?

Title sequences are used in order to keep the audience interested as well as introduce the film. Through looking at many different types of film openings, I have noticed that dramatic films usually start with a gesture to signify a moment or introduce a person. For example in 'Forest Gump' we not only are introduced to the character but the feather which flows from the beginning of the title sequences is a gesture as it makes the audience feel at peace and has a purpose. On the other hand, action/thriller films usually have very loud and up beat music in the title sequences, they also usually have a lot going on in the title sequences to inform the audience on what they may see in the film.

During title sequences, we are usually introduced to the main character(s) which is useful as naturally as the audience we begin to predict the goings on of the film and knowing the main character(s) before the film starts allows us to signify a relationship with the character.

I really liked the opening for the film 'Hostage' as they used many different types of proxemics in order to introduce the names of the actors and not only did I think this was aesthetically pleasing, but I also thought it differentiated itself from the other films as its approach was unique. This is a really good example of a title sequence as it builds the audiences tension up as well as gives the location and the names of the actors in an abstract way.
